Here is an extreme question as I am not sold yet on 100% gold standard: What if the majority of the worlds gold is held by one person and? all the gold of the world has been mined by the same person. The 'multiplier effect' literally means nothing. You base your admittedly superficially impressive mathematical models on the most primitive (and I do mean atavistic) presumptions such as the idea that the nominal level of money spending is what allows employment (not true even with real term spending) and that consequently you assume a link between savings and disemployment and therefore deflation is your pathetically crude answer to the malinvestment clearing bust at the business cycle.

Intrinsically it does not concern itself with the distortion in the rates of relative price rises occurring due to inflation, that's just part of the reason why many lower order consumption goods will in fact become expensive as production in more roundabout production structures and investment in higher order capital remoter from final good consumption undergoes a boom from the loans enabled by inflation even while savings may decrease with increased time pref.

Down with FDIC! Every time they impose a new safety net for the risks taken by businesses, the more risky businesses become. That the business of many relies on low interest rate loans whose derivation is ultimately based on money creation and profiting from rising prices in whatever sector, that is what makes the whole economy a house of cards when financial services do not invest well and float many unsustainable businesses from whom they cannot get their money back. @axe863 Well the disagreement I have with that is that a theory is not called upon to cover all the bases but to be truthful and internally consistent. If 'expectation elements' aren't always applicable to what what one might scientifically categorise and DEFINE as the business cycle, then it is no part of fundamental business cycle theory. Although business cycles wouldn't be that bad if laissez-faire were to be readopted following the corrective crash. Unfortunately that rarely occurs.

@Nintendomanwill I agree with you about risking ones own "money." Using inflationary tax to prop up inferior allocators is anti-free market. It eliminates the market based selection process. The costless hedge to extremal risk provided by the fed has prevented the systemic collapse of the critical nodes in our advanced macro-economy but it has also created the incentives for emergence of said events. Lol... They prevent the symptoms and increase the root cause of the problem.

It's possible for people to refrain from investing in the stock market or in mortgages when they believe that the housing boom and all the companies leveraged on it are ready to go bust. It is Hegelian to say that this is impossible, it is Hegelian to say that everyone will act so correctly. Peter Schiff acted correctly and tried to explain what would happen but nobody understood him. In regards to the Stock Market: Liberals' source of argument is that "the economy is doing better" just because the stock market has seen some gain. However, quite awhile ago I recall reading a passage from a Warren Buffet book that basically said the stock market does not necessarily correlate with the economy. It can *reflect* the economy to a certain degree, but it may also be deceitful. Your thoughts on this?

Since you can have FRB in a free market, you could still have cycles, but there are better checks on the practice. It is likely that FRB would have failed completely without the state since its banks are always technically insolvent. But speculation frenzy could also cause a localized cycle, not the big credit cycles modern central banks and states create.

Whenever FRB banks became insolvent, the gov't stepped in to help their favorites (bailout) and kept the system going as they proceeded to centralize banking more and more by making them buy gov't bonds for reserves and creating a pyramidal structure. Lincoln got it rolling, and it accelerated to the point where the Fed took over in 1914..

During those years prices fell, production rose, and the US shifted from agriculture to manufacturing. Idiot economists call this period a depression b/c they think falling prices are always bad. What are your thought of the pre-fed days specifically the 1873-1893 downturn not caused by inflated credit markets but competition among fixed productive capital? It seems that competition in many industries (railroads) involved big fixed investments with long turnover times. Bc costs couldn't be recouped before a new competitor/technique/capital stock entered the market there was huge price deflation and crisis. The bus cycle is caused by overaccumulation rather than govt provoked specualtion.

@gunsandbullhorns Say's law is that aggregate demand equals aggregate supply, but not necessarily that each thing a person wants to buy is in supply or vice versa. I followed my own instructions and googled "Say's law". This is what I got: mises(dot)org/journals/qjae/pdf/qjae12_2_4.pdf If you believe demand can be augmented, then the argument becomes when is demand bellow equilibrium and when is it above and what can we do to shift it back. But that idea was only realized by Keynes.

@crambo0349 I'm familiar with the French Liberal Economist Jean-Baptiste Say, and I know of 3 different interpretations of Say's Law. Briefly, they can be summed-up as follows... a) Supply of strawberries creates demand for strawberries. b) Supply of strawberries creates demand for strawberry baskets. c) The strawberry producer produces with the intent of exchange. I think 'A' is ridiculous. I think 'B' is cool, but not usually relevant. I think 'C' is what Say intended.

@gunsandbullhorns Okay, so most Austrians believe that demand increases, but slowly. For a fixed year, say, demand would be the same no matter what. The Fed lowers interest rates, which allocates resources away from short-term supply stuff and into long term supply stuff, though demand cannot sustain that long term investment. Just google Say's law; it's a fundamental aspect of Austrian economics. The person that made this video is Keynesian.

I would think that Demand could only be fixed ACROSS time. ...and for the record, I don't believe that Demand is necessarily fixed across time, nor would I ever work off such a ludicrous assumption. ...but perhaps I misunderstand you. @Stargazer5781 I think the Krugmans of the world DO understand it, they just choose to ignore it and take the comfortable side of supporting the government and Wall Street apparatus. Read some of Greenspan's writing long before taking over as Fed Chair -- you would find him to be more of a hard money, expensive credit Austrian-type then what he turned out to be once joining the cabal. They all KNOW, they just choose the path of their own personal gain.

Paul knows this, but he can't figure out why it failed, so he basically makes stuff up & the New York Times prints it. This is a very misleading title. I seen a good few videos from Mises pawning Keynes. One of the more recent "Why Your Grandfather's Economics Was Better Than Yours" Is an excellent example. One of the things people try and honour Keynes, the whole, at least Keynes brought the subject of money into the business cycle, and "destroying" JB Say.
